Who really knows what we are celebrating on Labour Day? The concept of a public holiday to celebrate workers and the labour movement seems counterintuitive to me, but I will gladly take it as an excuse to spend a long weekend in Sydney. My posse of Eagle Street Yuppies had flights booked for straight after work on Friday so that we could capitalise on having an epic night out at Kings Cross. Admittedly it's very brazen to arrive sober at Sydney airport (notwithstanding attempts to get drunk on the plane) and go straight to the Cross, so we decided to start off with cocktails at The Passage Bar in Darlinghurst. Sure, there are always your typical popular tourist haunts like Ivy Bar or Hugos Lounge. But I much prefer to hang out with the true Sydneysiders in local gems like The Passage. ...
Located on Victoria Street in the much classier suburb of Darlinghurst, it is a perfect place to start off before kicking on for a loose night in the Cross. It looks tiny from the exterior and you might otherwise walk past if it wasn't for the cloud of smokers outside. As you might expect from the name, The Passage is long, narrow space that is dimly lit and lined with marble banquettes. Right down the back is the bar that is handsomely stocked with all the ingredients for their eccentric cocktails. Whole plums and pisco? Smoked speck tequila and citrus? Sure, why not.
The crowd here is a blend of trendy urban types and corporate suits, all good looking and all keen for some late night revelry. As for the music, they were cranking up the RnB pop classics until late on Friday night, which is definitely unique from any bar that exists in Brisbane. That may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I will unashamedly admit that catchy black beats are one of my guilty indulgences.

| All in all, The Passage was the beginning of a perfect weekend getaway in Sydney. Other weekend outings included brunch at Bills, dinner at Spice Temple, cocktails at the Shangri-La Hotel, another brunch at Bondi Hardware and last but not least, a private yacht cruise on the harbour. Apparently there are some things money can't buy. But for everything else (including all my Sydney weekend activities), there's MasterCard.
